To Dress a Ptarmigan
My hometown, Kiruna (67.8558° N) in Sweden, north of the arctic circle, is my inspiration and subject. I have been working on the “To Dress a Ptarmigan” since 2018. The title references Kiruna, which in Sápmi means ptarmigan. The city’s center, now unstable after decades of iron mining, is being destroyed and rebuilt in a new location, to a dismaying loss. Yet, the area is also known for many things, among them spectacular shows of aurora borealis. So Kiruna exists in tension between what is above and below.
